National Disability Employment Awareness Month

National Disability Employment

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities by federal agencies, federal contractors, or programs receiving federal funds. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The U.S. Dept. of Labor named this year’s theme as “Access to Good Jobs for All.” For ways you can get involved, visit the Office of Disability’s Employment Policy website for 31 Days of NDEAM.

Ways to celebrate NDEAM:

    1. Use social media to promote understanding of disabilities.
    2. Ensure the environment is fully accessible and ADA compliant.
    3. Promote understanding through educational opportunities—educate people that not all disabilities are visible.
    4. Volunteer or support a charity—just a little time can make a world of difference.
    5. Include people with disabilities in your activities and posts, avoid stereotypes.

Samhain / Halloween / Day of the Dead

Samhain Halloween

October 31, 2024 – November 1, 2024

Halloween had its beginnings in an ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of the dead. The Celtic people divided the year by four major holidays, with Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween) marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on Samhain, more so than any other time of the year, the ghosts of the dead were able to mingle with the living. On that day, the souls of those who had died during the year traveled into the otherworld. People gathered to sacrifice animals, fruits, and vegetables. They lit bonfires in honor of the dead, to aid them on their journey, and to keep them away from the living. On that day all manner of beings were abroad: ghosts, fairies, and demons–all part of the dark and dread. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.

Global Diversity Awareness Month

October is Global Diversity Awareness Month, an opportunity to celebrate and increase awareness about diversity and the positive impact it has in the workplace and wider society. It is a time to connect with others, to learn about their cultures and to stay informed regarding events in your own neighborhood, state, nation and world. It is a time to explore different ways of doing things, whether it be cooking, dancing, art, music, or language — the options are as varied as the people we meet.

The University of Arkansas Information Technology Services offers instructions on how staff can access LinkedIn Learning Online Tutorials. Offerings are free with unlimited access to classes, as well as an online library of instructional videos. Visit their website for more information and a link to log in.
